Irish Flutes

Just Starting Out on the Irish Flute?

At the moment, the irish flutes that we carry are by Tony Dixon and are aimed at those just starting out. You can choose from either the basic pvc type irish flutes or his tapered-bore 3-Piece Polymer Flute. The 3 Piece Polymer is what Blayne Chastain, Whistle & Drum’s founder started out on as he found it very easy to play for someone who had never played a proper flute before. While the 3-Piece Polymer is more expensive than the PVC varieties, it will play more like a honest-to-goodness Irish flute than the cylindrical bore pvc flutes. This is naturally due to its design; having a conical bore and thick walls just like more expensive professional model Irish flutes.

If you are really serious about pursing the Irish flute we currently recommend that you grab either the PVC or the 3-Piece Polymer now and then immediately get on Patrick Olwell’s waiting list for one of his flutes. If you are unfamiliar with Patrick Olwell, Brad Hurley’s interview of him can be found here. Give that a good read and then give Pat a call. I think the current wait-time is about 1 year and the deposit required is about $300. You won’t regret it. Blayne plays his flutes exclusively and feels that you’d be hard pressed to find a finer maker of Irish flutes.

That said, to get started you’ll need a flute, tutorial and possibly a tune book or two...
